Environmentalist Saima Abbasi founded Go Green Lahore in 2017. Saima grew up in Lahore, Pakistan and was heartbroken to hear that her hometown had made global headline news for having one of the poorest air quality indexes in the world. This did not come as a surprise to her as she had seen the urban sprawl increase over the many trips she made to Pakistan since 1989, when she had moved to Chicago. The alarming news told her that she needed to act - and fast. She had always cared deeply about the city she grew up in and was determined to do something to make a difference. She believes that every human being has the right to breathe clean air.

While living in Chicago, Saima has served as a board member for a group called Go Green Wilmette, which focuses on aiding environmental efforts in the Chicago area. She was inspired by how well the group functioned in making a difference in her community. She spoke with the board members about her desire to do something similar in Pakistan and, received support. In 2017 she made a trip to Lahore with a mission to start an environmental organization. She began outreach to friends, family and local environmentalists who she knew shared her love for the environment and concern for the future of the city.

Saima’s mission in founding Go Green Lahore was to gather a group of like-minded individuals who cared about the future of their beautiful hometown, to ensure that it had champions in the future to come - a future in which development, capitalistic growth, and industrialization would no-doubt wreak havoc upon the city’s natural ecosystem if gone unchecked. Saima continues to advise the board of directors and serves as chief advisor for the organization.
